Description

Confederate St. Augustine resident, H.B. Jenckes' account of day-to-day activities in a March 10-13th, 1862 letter to Mary Martha Reid. Her initial concern is for a small attack at Tocoi, then she turns her attention to food shortages and the rising prices of goods in Confederate St. Augustine. On March 12th, she describes the scene as Commander C.R.P Rogers and Flag Officer Samuel Du Pont survey St. Augustine with Mayor Cristobal Bravo (Paul Arneau having just left his post) before occupying it for the Union. Further detail is on controversy surrounding Trinity Episcopal Parish's, Father L.R. Staudenmeyer's prayers for the Union and Abraham Lincoln after beginning the war a supporter of the Confederacy.
