Description

Clarissa Anderson's 1862 letter to her son, Andrew Anderson describing Willie Williams' return to St. Augustine after being paroled and released from a Union prison. Later, Anderson details the arrival of John Dickison and Judge Benjamin Putnam to the western border of town, on the San Sebastian bridge. Judge Putnam was admitted, but Dickison was not. On the 18th, Anderson writes about food exchanges between town Unionists and Confederates, along the western picket line. There's concern over being driven from her home and on December 20, report of a possible Confederate gunboat firing in Matanzas Harbor. A few citizens suggest an attack, but that notion is quickly dispelled.
