Description
Clarissa Anderson's 1863 letter to her son, Andrew Anderson, describing Mrs. Frances Kirby Smith's decision to remain in the city, a cold front, and Confederate deserters arriving in St. Augustine. The deserter arrives with rumors of a large-scale attack from General Joseph Finnegan's troops, aimed at taking town provisions, but are dispelled by Anderson in the letter. Of particular note is a fire, possibly started by Union soldiers, near Tolomato Street (present day Cordova Street) and the "Catholic Cemetary." On April 11th, Anderson describes a Catholic priest coming to the picket line, bringing news of gunboats passing Charleston, S.C., but being denied entrance to St. Augustine. The rest of the letter touches on upkeep of the Markland House and the arrival of future mail ships.
